The Tower's publicity officer kindly sent this press release that he had issued:
SEAFORD MUSEUM and HERITAGE SOCIETY
MARTELLO TOWER - ESPLANADE - SEAFORD - EAST SUSSEX

Press Release

Over the weekend, Seaford Museum took part in the national “Heritage Open Days” giving free entry to the museum on Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Over 500 visitors took advantage of this offer and they were not only locals. There were several on day trips from London, including tourists from other countries, as well as near neighbours from other parts of Sussex.

Most visitors were on the Sunday, when there was the attraction of military re-enactment soldiers from the same period as the Martello Tower (early 1800s). These were from the 95th Rifles in their dark green uniforms and one member of the 44th East Essex Regiment of Foot in his red coat. They were busy all day explaining their kit and life-styles of that time and gave several rifle drill and firing displays leaving visitors with ringing ears. The picture shows how risky it is with these old style flint-lock rifles, as the flare is very close to the face of the rifleman.

The Museum committee would like to thank the group who came from north Essex at no cost to the museum and we hope they can come for similar events in the coming years.

Seaford Museum is located in the Martello Tower at the eastern end of the seafront near the cliffs. More details of the museum can be seen on their web-site http://www.seafordmuseum.co.uk
