Landguard Fort Despatch - Oct 2006

Post by Official Post »

The final public event of the year for the 95th Rifles Living History Society representing
1st Battalion 95th (Rifle) Regiment of Foot (1/95), 2nd Battalion 44th East Essex Regiment of Foot (2/44) and
62eme Regiment d'Infanterie de Ligne.

The authorities of this magnificent Georgian/Victorian fort (http://www.landguard.com) kindly gave us permission to use the barracks throughout the weekend and we duly set up billets in the many barrack rooms.

There was lots of interest from the local media with reporter/photographers from the local newspaper and from Felixstowe TV.

On the 2 days we had a full agenda of activities by all 3 regiments, including:
Drill and skirmish techniques of British and French armies;
Lecture on the uniforms and equipment coupled with a firing demonstration on the battlements;

Musket versus Baker Rifle stripping and reassembly competition;
Skirmish within the Fort's walls between British and French troops.

On Saturday night, the Society held a 70th birthday celebration for our beloved Commanding Officer, Lt Colonel Les Handscombe. Again the Fort authorities did us proud and provided us with a suitable room for the celebrations and to view some of the footage from our 2006 Events DVDs.

The Colonel was surprised and amazed by the marvellous birthday cake by Lisa Durose. It was named "Sweet Victory" aka "All Enemies Vanquished"

Sunday was wet but it did not dampen (excuse the pun!) our spirits or determination to put on a good show for the resolute public who braved the weather. The skirmish went ahead and, despite the persistent rain, all guns fired continuously - a testament to the gun care instilled in our Members.

A great end to the season at a wonderful venue.

The 1/95th Rifles will definitely march again at Landguard Fort and in 2007.

Watch Events News for information on 2007 events as the details are finalised.
